NEWCASTLE ISLAND ORIENTEERING

NANAIMO HARBOUR, VANCOUVER ISLAND

 

An orienteering classic: Two days of orienteering on Newcastle Island.

Where: Newcastle Island Provincial Park, Nanaimo.

Foot passenger ferries on the hour from Maffeo-Sutton Park (behind the hockey arena, 2 km from BC Ferries terminal)

Registration: Register day of meet. Registration open 11AM Saturday, 9 AM Sunday

Costs: Day 1: $10/day ($8/day members) Juniors: $7/day ($5/day members) Tenting - group campground $5/ tent/night

Prizes: For each course champion

Courses: Day 1: B meet: 4 courses (3 km - 7 km). Pre-drawn maps. 1 PM First Start

Day 2 : B meet : 4 courses. 10 AM First Start

Note: No course 1 on either day.

Beginners Clinic: Beginners are welcome. Clinic Day 1 only at 12:00 . Note: No course 1 on either day. Try course 2 !

Facilities: Group campground, hot showers, take-out t restaurant, Dingy Dock pub and restaurant on nearby Protection Island

Map: Colour 1:10,000 Terrain: Flat to gently sloping. Mix of moderate salal in douglas fir forest, mossy openings on rock and fen meadows. Leg covering recommended.
